What is the history and popularity of the app?

FreshGuide is one of the newer additions to the group buying websites available today. The site launched in 2010. It began as a female-focused site that provides a hand chosen selection of special deals women love. FreshGuide falls under the Sugar Inc. umbrella, which also includes PopSugar.tv and ShopStyle.com. FreshGuide has been featured on Daily Candy and other online media sites as a great way for women to save money in their local community. FreshGuide was acquired by Sugar Inc. in June 2010.

What are the differences to other apps?

Many group buying websites are dedicated to a general group of users. A few, however, have decided to diversify to meet the needs and desires of a more specific demographic. Fresh Guide is geared towards an all female audience. Users do not have to be female to use Fresh Guide, but most of the daily deals are offered up with women in mind. The site’s collection is very diverse, and covers many different activities and services that can easily entice any woman searching for a way to experience her community without spending a fortune.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

FreshGuide has a very “refreshing” design. A stylized slice of what appears to be grapefruit accents the FreshGuide logo. The site itself features a slate blue background with a charming softly checkered strip accenting the top. Everything is well spaced, so the user doesn’t feel crowded or overwhelmed. FreshGuide gets right to the point, presenting users with deals and the email sign up field as soon as they arrive at the homepage. Overall, FreshGuide is easy to navigate and softly elegant.

How does the registration process work?

Users can choose to login with their existing Facebook profile. Others can join up to receive FreshGuide emails by entering their valid address in the field provided on the homepage. After doing so, the user can select a city from the dropdown box provided before clicking the green “See Today’s Deal” button. New users should note that not all cities provided are currently available for daily deals. A pop up box will appear advising the user that FreshGuide is almost ready to launch that location if this is the case for the city they chose.

What does it cost to use the application?

User participation is an important part of sites like FreshGuide. Without users to buy daily deals, there would be no activity on the site and few businesses would offer up deals to entice more users. FreshGuide allows everyone to stop by, create an account and get started browsing deals in their desired city for free. The only time money is spent is when users decide to purchase a daily deal. There is no minimum deal purchases required to maintain user accounts.

Who would you recommend the application to?

FreshGuide is definitely a site for women who love to save money. Those who have a tight budget can also benefit by saving money on activities and entertainment. Sites like FreshGuide give many users the chance to make their entertainment money go much farther with savings of 50% or more.
